About the Service
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic document issued by a government-authorised Certifying Authority that verifies the identity of an individual or organisation in the digital space.
It functions as the online equivalent of a handwritten signature or notarised stamp, giving legal validity to documents signed electronically. In Bharat, DSCs are issued under the Information Technology Act, 2000.
DSCs are mandatory for filing documents on several government portals, including the MCA portal, the Income Tax e-filing portal, the GST portal, and the EPFO portal.
Without a valid DSC, company directors cannot sign MCA forms, professionals cannot certify filings electronically, and businesses cannot participate in government e-procurement tenders.
What Are the Different Classes of DSC?
Class 3 DSC
Class 3 is the highest and most widely used category of DSC in India today. It provides the strongest level of identity verification and is required for MCA filings, income tax filings for companies, GST portal access, and government e-tenders.
The Controller of Certifying Authorities discontinued Class 1 and Class 2 DSCs in January 2021. All new DSC applications and renewals are now issued as Class 3 only.
Validity Period
DSCs are generally issued with a validity of one year or two years. Once expired, they must be renewed before they can be used again for signing filings and documents.

Step 3: Complete the Application Form
The online application form is completed with personal details exactly matching PAN and Aadhaar records.
Step 4: Submit Documents and Verification
Aadhaar-based OTP verification provides the fastest approval process. Paper-based verification may take longer.

Step 6: Register the DSC on Government Portals
The DSC must be registered on the relevant portals such as MCA before it can be used for signing forms electronically.
How Is a DSC Used in Practice?
On the MCA Portal
DSCs are used for incorporation filings, annual returns, Director KYC, and all other MCA compliance filings.
On the Income Tax Portal
Companies and professionals use DSCs to file income tax returns, audit reports, and certifications electronically.
On the GST Portal
DSC authentication is mandatory for certain GST filings, especially for companies and LLPs.
On e-Procurement Portals
Government tenders and procurement portals require bids and documents to be signed using a valid DSC.
DSC Renewal
DSCs expire after their validity period and must be renewed before further use. Businesses should ideally begin the renewal process at least 30 days before expiry to avoid disruptions in MCA, GST, or income tax filings.
Renewal requires fresh verification and submission of documents similar to the original application process.

Common Questions
Can one DSC be used for multiple companies?
Yes. A single DSC issued to an individual can be registered and used across multiple companies where that individual acts as a director or authorised signatory.
What happens if a USB token is lost or damaged?
If the USB token is lost or damaged, a new DSC must be applied for. The existing certificate can also be revoked through the Certifying Authority to prevent misuse.
Is a DSC the same as an Aadhaar-based e-signature?
No. Aadhaar-based e-signatures are OTP-based one-time signatures, whereas a DSC is a reusable digital certificate stored securely on a USB token or cloud platform.
How long does it take to get a DSC?
With Aadhaar OTP verification, a DSC can usually be issued within one to two working days. Paper-based verification may take longer.
Is a DSC mandatory for LLP partners?
Yes. Designated partners of LLPs must obtain a valid DSC to sign and file forms on the MCA portal, including incorporation and annual compliance filings.
