About the Service

Trade without borders is possible, but not without paperwork. Any business in India that wants to import goods, export goods, or both needs one foundational registration before the first shipment moves: the Import Export Code, commonly called IEC.

The IEC is a ten-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and it is the single most important registration for any Indian business with cross-border commercial ambitions. Without it, customs will not clear your shipments, your bank cannot process foreign remittances linked to trade, and your export incentive claims cannot be filed.

This page covers everything you need to know about IEC registration: who needs it, how to get it, what it costs, and what comes after.

What Is the Import Export Code

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a unique ten-digit business identification number issued under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, by the DGFT under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

It is:

  • Mandatory for all importers and exporters in India
  • Permanent (no renewal required, but an annual update is mandatory)
  • Linked to the business PAN
  • Required by customs for every import and export transaction
  • Required by banks for processing foreign trade payments

The IEC is not activity-specific. A single IEC covers all types of goods you import or export under your business entity. You do not need a separate IEC for each product category.

Who Needs IEC Registration

Importers

Any business or individual importing commercial goods into India.

Exporters

Any business or individual exporting goods or services from India.

E-commerce Exporters

Businesses selling products to international buyers through platforms like Amazon Global, eBay, or their own international website.

Service Exporters

While services exported under certain RBI categories do not require an IEC, most service businesses dealing with foreign clients benefit from IEC registration for banking and remittance purposes.

Exemptions

Certain importers and exporters are exempt, including government departments importing for official use and individuals importing goods for personal use (not for commercial purposes). However, for any commercial trade, IEC is non-negotiable.

The Benefits Beyond Customs Clearance

IEC registration is most commonly described as a requirement. But it also enables access to export incentive schemes that are financially significant for growing exporters.

RoDTEP and Export Incentive Schemes

Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) and its successor RoDTEP provide duty credit benefits or incentives to exporters based on export value. IEC is required to claim these benefits through the DGFT portal.

Export Promotion Capital Goods (EPCG) Scheme

Allows import of capital goods at zero or reduced customs duty for use in export production, subject to export obligations. IEC is required.

Advance Authorisation Scheme

Allows duty-free import of raw materials used in export products. Requires IEC.

ECGC Export Credit Insurance

The Export Credit Guarantee Corporation provides credit risk protection to exporters. IEC is required for policy issuance.

These incentives collectively reduce the cost of exporting and improve competitiveness in international markets. Businesses that register IEC but do not apply for export incentives are leaving money unclaimed.

Documents Required for IEC Registration

The IEC application process is fully online through the DGFT portal. Documents required include:

  • PAN card of the business entity
  • Aadhaar or passport of the proprietor, partner, or director
  • Certificate of incorporation, LLP agreement, or proprietorship declaration
  • Bank account details of the business (cancelled cheque or bank certificate)
  • Bank account must be in the name of the entity (not a personal account)
  • Digital photograph of the applicant
  • Digital signature (for companies and LLPs)

For companies and LLPs, the authorised signatory must have a valid DSC (Digital Signature Certificate) registered on the DGFT portal.

The IEC Application Process: Step by Step

  1. Visit dgft.gov.in and register or log in using your business PAN.
  2. Under the "Apply for IEC" section, fill in the ANF-2A (Aayaat Niryaat Form) with business details, bank account details, and director or partner information.
  3. Upload the required documents.
  4. Pay the government fee of Rs. 500 online.
  5. Submit the application. The DGFT system auto-validates PAN details with the income tax database.
  6. Upon successful verification, the IEC is issued within 2 to 3 working days in most cases. The certificate is available for download from the DGFT portal.

The Annual Update Requirement

This is the most commonly overlooked aspect of IEC compliance. While the IEC itself does not expire, the DGFT requires all IEC holders to update or confirm their IEC details on the portal every year between April and June.

The update is simple. If nothing has changed (address, bank, directors, etc.), it is just a confirmation. If details have changed, they must be updated.

Failure to complete the annual update results in the IEC being deactivated. A deactivated IEC cannot be used for customs clearance or DGFT scheme applications until it is reactivated.

IEC and the Compliance Stack for Import-Export Businesses

A business involved in international trade carries a compliance stack that is wider than a domestic-only business.

GST on Imports

IGST is levied on imported goods at the time of customs clearance. GST registration is required, and GST return filing must reflect import and export transactions accurately, including IGST paid and refund mechanisms where applicable.

Customs Compliance

Every import and export shipment requires a Bill of Entry (import) or Shipping Bill (export). These are filed through a customs broker and linked to your IEC.

FEMA Compliance

Foreign exchange received from exports must be repatriated to India within the prescribed timelines under FEMA. Banks monitor compliance, but the business remains responsible.

Transfer Pricing

If imports or exports are conducted with related parties, transfer pricing documentation may be mandatory under Indian tax regulations.

For businesses manufacturing packaged goods for export or import, compliance with Legal Metrology Certificate requirements may also apply, particularly for pre-packaged products entering the Indian market.

Maintaining accurate records of foreign currency transactions, IGST payments, export refunds, customs documents, and remittances is significantly more complex than domestic bookkeeping. Professional bookkeeping and accounting services help ensure consistency across DGFT filings, customs documentation, and GST returns.

Common Questions

Is IEC registration the same as customs registration?

No. IEC is issued by DGFT and identifies your business as an authorised importer or exporter. Customs registration relates to customs filings and procedures. IEC is required before customs transactions but is not itself a customs registration.

Does IEC registration have a validity period?

The IEC is permanent but must be updated annually through the DGFT portal between April and June each year. Failure to update results in deactivation.

Can an individual (not a company) get an IEC?

Yes. Individuals conducting commercial import or export transactions can apply using their personal PAN and Aadhaar. The IEC is issued in the individual's name.

Is an IEC required for importing goods for personal use?

No. Goods imported for personal use and not for commercial purposes are generally exempt from the IEC requirement.

Can a business with a deactivated IEC still clear customs?

No. A deactivated IEC cannot be used for import or export transactions. Customs clearance will be blocked until the IEC is reactivated.

Does every export shipment require a separate IEC filing?

No. IEC is a one-time registration. The same ten-digit code is used for all import and export transactions of the business and is quoted on customs documents such as Shipping Bills and Bills of Entry.
